2024 BANFF RED FILM LINE-UP
REEL ROCK: DNA
23 minutes, contains some subtitles (from French)
Top climber Seb Bouin attempts to establish an epic route out of an overhanging cave in France's Verdon Gorge. His proposed line is so futuristic, the moves so improbable, that if he can put it all together it may be the most difficult route ever climbed. Battling all conditions, his main climbing partner is his mum Claire (herself an 8b climber) - so it's no surprise that Seb thinks genetics are key to his success.
CHRONOCEPTION
41 minutes, contains some subtitles (from French)
On the trail of nomadic peoples and the ancient Silk Roads, three skiers and boarders embark on an expedition to reach one of the most remote parts of Asia: the Tien Shan mountains, on the Kyrgyzstan-China border. With unexplored mountains and faces, the team find themselves propelled into a world where time and space appear to stand still. Facing wild mountain landscapes, wild weather patterns and wild animals, the trio battle hostile conditions to ski stunning lines down truly immaculate peaks.
SOUNDSCAPE
14 minutes
WINNER: Award for Creative Excellence
Soundscape shares the sightless experience of climbing a mountain via echo location, touch and imagination. It features Erik Weihenmayer, a fully blind adventure athlete and author, as he ascends a massive rock face deep in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Using expert camera work and emotive, novel animation to bring to life a concept by adaptive climbing pioneer Timmy O’Neill, the film is a surprising and soulful adventure.
SHERI
19 minutes
How one woman's passion for design and innovation revolutionised the outdoor industry. Aged 50, Sheri Tingey defied the odds and expectations of those around her by starting a company that changed the way paddle sports in the backcountry are viewed around the world. Sheri is the incredible story of Sheri's life, the hurdles she overcame to launch her company, and the brilliance and commitment she brings to her projects every day. Guaranteed to warm and inspire.
CROSS COUNTRIES
8 minutes
Mountain biking legend Kilian Bron spends his time travelling the world looking for thrilling routes to ride, and this time he’s crossing North America on some of the continent’s most iconic trails. From urban bike life in New York City, to red rock formations in Moab, to dense Canadian forests, Kilian embarks on the ultimate ride – captured with his signature artistic flair.
PIONEERS: TANDEM XC SKIING
20 minutes
Two friends in search of vindication. After winning the Birkebeiner – the largest cross country ski race in North America – Joe Dubay was disqualified for wearing the wrong bib. Now, 11 years later, Joe and his former roommate Chris (who lent him the bib) return to the Birkebeiner to pioneer a new sport: tandem cross-country skiing. Bouncing between hilarious and 'actually really impressive,' this is a story about bending the rules to compete in a classic American ski race.
