Cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer's hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added, and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

There are two types of cookie:

Persistent cookies:

Persistent cookies remain on a user’s device for a set period of time specified in the cookie. They are activated each time that the user visits the website that created that particular cookie.

Session cookies:

Session cookies are temporary. They allow website operators to link the actions of a user during a browser session. A browser session starts when a user opens the browser window and finishes when they close the browser window. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.

Cookies also have, broadly speaking, four different functions and can be categorised as follows: ‘essential’ cookies, ‘performance’ cookies, ‘functionality’ cookies and ‘targeting’ cookies.

How we use cookie functions:

Essential cookies:

Essential cookies are the ones that allow you to access our website and navigate through the pages with ease. Without them, you simply won’t be able to use our site.

Performance cookies:

These help us understand how you’re using our site. Performance cookies help us to analyse information like numbers of visitors to our website, measure usage and assess how well our advertising is working. We’ll use this information to tweak the performance of our website and improve your experience. We do this through Google Analytics:

>Google Analytics:

When someone visits www.banff-uk.com we use a third-party service, Google Analytics, to collect standard internet log information and details of visitor behaviour patterns. We do this to find out things such as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site to improve our website. This information is only processed in a way which does not identify anyone. We do not make, and do not allow Google to make, any attempt to find out the identities of those visiting our website.

Functionality cookies:

These cookies help us to offer extra functionality on our website. These enable features that will make it easier to navigate and use the website. For example, if you visit our shop and select an item to purchase, the functional cookie remembers this selection so that your shopping cart will have the items you selected when you are ready to check out.

Targeting cookies:

We use some cookies to track the interest our visitors have in our website and merchandise. We use the third-party retargeting services of Facebook Custom Audiences and Google AdWords.

>Facebook Custom Audiences & Google AdWords:

With the help of a cookie, web beacon, or tracking pixel from Facebook Custom Audiences & Google AdWords, your browser records which websites (where such marketing services are active) you have visited and what content interested you. When someone visits www.banff-uk.com we sometimes then use this to understand what our customers are really interested in, so we can make sure we’re offering the right content. This means we can use browsing behaviour to create the most relevant banner adverts, only showing you information that you have already viewed, or are similar to what you have already seen on our website. These banner adverts are displayed across a variety of other websites that customers may visit. This is called behavioural advertising and is tailored to each individual user, however cookie data is always anonymised and only stored temporarily.

Overall, cookies help us provide you with a better website and in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

We know cookies can be a bit complicated, so if you still feel like you need to learn more, visit www.allaboutcookies.org/manage-cookies to answer any of your cookie-related questions.

Cookie Removal:

You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may however prevent you from taking full advantage of the website. The best way to do this is in your own browser settings, where you can disable cookies entirely or for specific domains, i.e. websites you visit. We've listed help pages that explain how to do this for the main browsers below:
